
Meet Dr. Akram
Dr. Akram is an adult and geriatric psychiatrist who practices in the DMV area. After graduating from the prestigious King Edward Medical University in Pakistan, Dr. Akram came to the U.S. for further studies. He did postdoctoral fellowship at NYU and then Psychiatry residency and Geriatric fellowship at the University of Virginia.
Growing up in Pakistan and having lived and studied in Europe and the Middle east, gave Dr. Akram immense exposure to different cultures. He can communicate in various languages like, Urdu, Punjabi, Hindi, English, and some Arabic.
Besides having a vast experience of working with patients in his outpatient clinic, Dr. Akram is experienced in treating acute patients in hospitals, and chronic severely mentally ill in community mental health centers. He has also worked in nursing homes, and corrections facilities. He brings this wealth of experience while treating his patients in his practice.
He has served as medical director of UVA community health systems and as a lead physician at Fairfax CSB. These leadership responsibilities come with a lot of responsibilities, problem solving, and education. Dr. Akram has used these skills in solving mental health issues in his practice
What I Do
My approach is to focus on the whole patient and follow evidence-based treatment guidelines and bring about a positive change. I treat patients with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), depression, obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), Trauma, post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) & complex PTSD, anxiety, panic disorder, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, sleep problems, insomnia, Autism spectrum disorder, Traumatic brain injuries (TBI), and women’s mental health such as post partum depression, premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) . I also discuss treatment options like Ketamine for severe depression.
Due to my experience of working both in acute inpatient setting and non-acute or chronic outpatient setting, I am proficient in dealing with acute crisis intervention and chronic maintenance treatment.
